Stetson found their beginnings in 1865. The story goes that John B. Stetson, the son of a hat-maker, developed the first cowboy hat, during a rain storm. He used beaver pelt and the felting skills he learned from his father and came up with a tall-crowned, wide brimmed creation that his friends jeered at. That is, until a passing cowboy rode by and asked to buy the hat for a $5 gold piece. John B. set up his factory, and in the decade of his death, he employed over 5000 people.
